Carving out sections of topographic maps with my x-acto knife, I create intricate collages on canvas and watercolor paper. Working with the inherent texture of the canvas and paper, I soften my paints by adding a lot of water, increasing the paints' flow and further exposing the surface texture.
The areas I choose to cut away with my knife represent stagnations within the systems - I remove areas that are aesthetically disruptive to the overall flow of the map or that seem to go against the grain of natural movement.
