Carving out sections of topographic maps with my x-acto knife, I create intricate collages on canvas and watercolor paper. Working with the inherent texture of the canvas and paper, I soften my paints by adding a lot of water. This increases the paints' fluidity and further exposes the richness of the surface texture.

The areas I choose to cut away with my knife represent areas of stagnation within the systems - I remove areas that appear disruptive to the overall flow of the map, or sections that seem to go against the grain of natural movement as it filters through an environment.
